KOTN

Wegz x KOTN World Cup Campaign

How we built a World Cup campaign that truly honored Egyptian street football.

Egypt is one of the most football-obsessed countries in the world. But when Egyptian football enters popular media, something is often missing.

The stars, the songs, the celebrity cameos are there. But the culture surrounding the game: the streets, the kids, the neighborhoods, the rivalries, and the generations who grew up playing wherever they could rarely gets the same attention.

For KOTN’s World Cup campaign with Wegz, we saw an opportunity to change that. Instead of creating another football campaign about Egypt, we wanted to make something that actually felt like Egyptian football culture.

Challenge

Egyptian street football has an enormous cultural footprint, but very little of it has been translated into a recognizable visual language.

Other football cultures have managed to build strong identities around their street game Brazilian street football has become synonymous with a certain energy, improvisation, and visual world. Italian football carries its own mythology of streets, neighborhoods, and local rivalries.

Egypt has all of this, the difference is that we haven't really seen it represented. The streets are where generations of Egyptian football fans learned the game. Kids played with whatever space they could find, whatever ball they had, and whatever goalposts they could improvise. That culture deserved to be the hero.

So the question became: Why shouldn't Egyptian street football have its own visual mythology?

Insight

We decided not to manufacture one. We went straight to the roots: a classic neighborhood football battle.

Just the kind of game that happens in neighborhoods every day: two sides, a street, a ball, an audience, and everything that comes with the rivalry. And Wegz became part of that world rather than being placed above it.

The campaign was about showing the Egypt that celebrates football.

Execution

The brief arrived just four days before the shoot. That gave us four days to develop and lock the concept, find and transform the right location, secure permits, assemble the crew, cast the players, and get everything into production.

There was no time to build an artificial version of street football from scratch. So we looked for the real thing. We found a neighborhood that could carry the story and built the campaign around its existing energy.

Result

The campaign immediately connected with audiences because it didn't try to explain Egyptian football culture. It showed it.

By building the campaign around an authentic neighborhood football battle, we created a World Cup story that felt recognizably Egyptian because it captured a real part of how football exists in the country.

The result was an instant hit and became one of KOTN's most-viewed videos.

More importantly, it demonstrated the potential of something that had been largely missing from Egyptian football media: a visual language for the street game itself.
